On September 17th and 18th, the Journées Européennes du Patrimoine (European Heritage Days) will be held for the 39thtime. As every year, the event open the doors of major sites and monuments, free of charge, as well as places, buildings and institutions closed to the public the rest of the time. Take the opportunity to discover the wealth of the district’s heritage during your stay at the Hotel Volney Opéra.
The district and its theatres
The 8th arrondissement, as well as the nearby streets, are renowned for their many performance halls. And the tradition is not new. Just a ten-minute walk from the Hotel Volney is the Théâtre de la Comédie Française. On Heritage Days, you’ll have the opportunity to go behind the scenes of this 17th century venue and learn of its history and connection to the playwright Molière. A completely different architectural style is demonstrated by the Grand Rex, an extravagant cinema dating from the golden age of movies, which offers a guided tour behind the scenes. Finally, don't forget the Palais Garnier, very close to the hotel, which organises themed tours for Heritage Days.
Unusual places to visit
Heritage Days are also an opportunity to check out some unexpected places, including the Gare Saint-Lazare. A professional guide will lead you through the history and architecture of the famous railway station and show you its secrets. A few streets away, the National Order of Pharmacists exhibits its little-known heritage. Old objects used to make remedies are displayed alongside archival documents, taking the visitor on a journey into the history of pharmacy practices through the centuries. Finally, discover the district’s covered passages and galleries. They hold treasures!
Staying at the Hotel Volney Opéra, it will be easy for you to enjoy the district’s many attractions. Please remember that it’s sometimes necessary to book well in advance!
