In the heart of the capital stands the Opera Garnier, a symbol of timeless elegance and artistic perfection, a sublime opera house where exceptional artistes perform. A must-see location during your stay in Paris, the Opera Garnier promises to enchant you.
Visit the Opéra Garnier
Built between 1860 and 1875 as part of the great works of city renovation orchestrated by Baron Haussmann, the Opera Garnier remains one of the most sumptuous symbols of this period.
From the outside, the building reveals a splendid architecture that makes it undoubtedly the most emblematic and representative example of the Second Empire style to be found in the capital.
Inside you will first notice the superb rotunda, a meeting place for patrons. Then, taking the Grand Staircase that is the building’s centrepiece, you will find the auditorium, lodges and back rooms once reserved for receptions during intermissions. A bronze and crystal chandelier weighing 8 tonnes and dressed with 400 lights illuminates the exquisite ceiling painting. Created in 1964 by Marc Chagall, it pays homage to Apollo. Pause to admire the old fountain and the statue of the Pythia or the Oracle of Delphi, a priestess of Ancient Greece. Finally, don’t miss the impressive galleries where you’ll enjoy stretching your legs during the intermission.
A programme of grand spectacles
Throughout the months to come the Opera Garnier will be presenting works by Mozart, Verdi and Tchaikovsky. Don’t miss out! Book your tickets today to see The Nutcracker in May, Don Giovanni in June/July or La Traviata in September/October. A grand gala is also planned on May 8th, 2019 to celebrate the 350 years of the Paris National Opera and Ballet. Or perhaps you would prefer Gaetano Donizetti’s comic opera Don Pasquale, scheduled to run until April 16th, 2019 or Mozart’s masterpiece The Magic Flute, a presentation that will captivate the Garnier from April 27th to June 15th, 2019.
